The Polar Vortex is coming! The Polar Vortex is coming!

Jacket/Jeans: H&M

Fur Vest: Forever21
Boots: Nine West
Sunglasses/Headband/Gloves: Target
Bag: Michael Kors

For years I tried so hard to ignore the 6 feet of snow that sat right outside my window. I would try to wear skirts or open toed shoes in the middle of January, hoping that maybe if I dressed for summer it would come faster. I downright hated the winter. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m still not a winter person, I’ve just learned how to dress appropriately for the weather.

With the Polar Vortex about to be in full swing, it’s imperative that you stay warm and fashionable. Sometimes I find myself frustrated when it’s freezing cold outside. It can be a little overwhelming finding the time to plan on matching an outfit, plus a coat, plus another coat, and winter accessories on top of that! It can be especially difficult on busy days when you’re in a rush.

As I type this, I have 5 other windows open with a ton of clothing sitting in the shopping carts on some of my favorite websites. I’m a little late, but I’ve finally got around to ordering a couple new winter coats, boots, and other essentials. I’m sure all of these things will be making a cameo or two on my blog in the next couple of weeks.

In the meantime, (while I wait 2-5 business days for my new clothes) I’ve found I have the most luck keeping my winter wardrobe somewhat basic. Jeans, black & white plain long sleeve shirts, and black boots are my best friends in the winter! Of course, there are days where I will actually throw some color, print, or eccentric garment into my daily attire.

Where I’m from, the current temperatures sitting around 20 degrees Fahrenheit, which isn’t too bad on a sunny day. But, as soon as is gets in to the 10’s or even negatives, it is extremely important to layer. With this outfit, I had on a plain t-shirt, sweater, fur vest, jacket, pants (obviously!), thick socks, warm booties, gloves, and a headband to keep my ears nice and toasty. One coat, two coat, three coat, four? Do what you have to, to stay warm.

Some tips to survive the polar vortex? Avoid really tight jeans; there won’t be enough room for your body temperature to warm the air in between the fabric. If you’re wearing a thick shirt or sweater, throw a short or long sleeve shirt underneath for extra warmth. Keep an extra pair of gloves in the car or your purse; just in case you forget to grab them on the way out the door, you’ve got a back-up! Invest in a nice jacket. It may put a dent in your wallet, but you’ll be glad when you get stuck out in a storm and don’t have hypothermia. Get to know a hat, meet each other and become familiar because it will be your best friend for the next few months. All the heat escapes from your head, so keep that noggin hot!

Honestly though, just have fun with the cold weather. Mix and match prints, pile on layers, try what you want. I personally think winter is the best time for fashion. Now, I want to hear from you! What are your best tips for staying warm in the winter time?

  3. You look amazing! It so funny how I'm in New York also and in my area we seem so far away from snow. I am waiting hopefully for school snow days this December. I have to start gearing up for the weather as the temperature is quickly dropping :)
