Fashionable under 50: Packing Your Suitcase

A lot of people are taking vacations now, or are planning vacations for February break. I’m going to the Caribbean in a couple weeks and will be there for about ten days. My biggest concern is not going over the 50-pound weight limit airliners have for suitcases. Seriously, it's happened to me before!

When I’m packing, like a lot of people, I get overwhelmed. Will there be a lot of chances to dress up? How many swimsuits will I need to pack? Should I bring a bunch of warm clothes in case it gets cold? I learn something new about "packing smart" every time I travel, but the most important thing I have learned is how to pack the essentials.

This post is directed towards vacationing somewhere warm, but if you’re going to a place where it will be chilly and a swimsuit probably won’t be the best choice, follow these guidelines with pants, sweaters, boots, etc. The most important thing is to pick pieces that are versatile and can be combined with a range of different outfits. Here are some of my best tips and a bit of inspiration for your next vacation.

  • If you have to think more than twice about packing something, leave it at home.
  • Always bring a pair of sneakers. Chances are you're going to have to do a little bit of walking around.
  • Stay away from heavy shoes. You could probably pack two or three pairs of flip flops for the weight of one pair of chunky heels.
  • My number one rule, always pack a Little Black Dress. Even if you're not planning on going to a fancy restaurant or a nice bar, having one just in case is never a bad idea.
  • Throw a light jacket in your suitcase. That way, if you're walking around at night and it gets a bit chilly, you'll be prepared.
  • Before you pack something, make sure you can wear it with at least two other things in your suitcase.
  • Leave a little space in your suitcase so you can bring souvenirs or other purchases back home.

Do you guys have any vacations planned in the near future? Do you have any additional packing tips?

  4. This is gonna sound dumb & takes out a lot of time before packing but whenever I leave for vacation, especially when I'm going to be there for a few weeks, I always pre-pack outfits. I make sure I know I can mix and match certain clothing items. Ever since I started doing that I never overpacked anymore. And I left for 2 months at a time!

Oh and I love literally all the clothes you posted :)

    1. That's not crazy at all, that's exactly what I do too. That way you never have regret of leaving something you could have worn at home. You're also right, it helps from over packing too! It does take a lot of time, but it's worth it.
