Comfortable & Casual

We’ve all been in that situation where we need to run out, whether it’s to pick up something at Target or grab some milk at the grocery store. You throw on your old high school hoodie and a pair of sweatpants or leggings. On the drive to the store you’re having a battle with your conscious “What if I run into someone I know?” “No, I won’t, I’ll only be out for a few minutes.” Well you know what ends up happening? You run into someone you know in the middle of the dairy aisle in your local supermarket. Now this isn’t just someone you know, it’s always the last person you want to see. It’s always an ex-boyfriend, your competition from work, an old friend, someone you wouldn’t want to be caught seeing in lounging-around-the-house clothes.

You have two options when approaching this situation. You can rock those leggings and ratty old sweatshirt, or you can dress better next time, and make sure you’ll never regret running into someone again because of your clothing. I figured I’d share some of my favorite tips for how to be causal and comfortably dressed, while still looking as if you just came from afternoon tea with the queen. Maybe not afternoon tea, but at least presentable enough for a “run in.” You’ll never be caught off guard in the diary aisle again after reading this post.

There’s a few ways to dress up and still be comfortable. The best way is to start with really minimal pieces and build on that. You can start with a basic pair of jeans and layer shirts, sweaters, and jackets on top. You can mix neutral tones, grays, blacks, etc. for a really sleek chic look, without trying too hard. If you’re going for the premium level of comfort, the gold medal of the comfort Olympics, layer baggy clothing with tight clothing. For example, a tighter fitting jogger pant, with a baggy sweater and baggy jacket. My biggest tip, if you’re going to go for a baggy look, is to keep the top half baggy and the legs tighter to ensure your real shape doesn’t get lost under all the clothing. You want to wear the clothing; you don’t want the clothing to wear you.

Do you have a go-to casual day outfit?
